M12 Coding Guide: A/B/D/X-Code Selection
[Summary]
A detailed guide to M12 A/B/C/D/X coding differences, mechanical keying, use cases and selection tips to avoid mismating.
1. Why Coding?
Coding uses different mechanical keying on insulators or shells to prevent mismating of connectors with the same pin count but different use cases.
2. Five Common Codes
| Coding | Pin counts | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| A-Code | 3/4/5/8/12/17 | Sensor/Actuator (DC signal) |
| B-Code | 5/8 | PROFIBUS, DeviceNet Fieldbus |
| C-Code | 3/4/5/6 | Power+Signal (AC/DC shared, shielded) |
| D-Code | 4 | 100Mbps Industrial Ethernet |
| X-Code | 8 | 1/10Gbps Industrial Ethernet |
3. Selection Tips
① For Ethernet use D-Code (100M) or X-Code (10G); ② For sensors: A-Code; ③ PROFIBUS: B-Code.
